For an animator, there’s great fun in taking something that’s sweet and childlike and giving it a surprise ending.

This cartoon animation takes us back to our childhood with its illustrated artwork reminiscent of a children’s storybook. Soft lullaby music gently pulls us in and sets up the spot’s punchline, which is clumsily delivered by the black sheep of the group. The traditionally animated sheep were illustrated using colored pencil on colored paper, composited over the illustrated background and digitally “averaged” to add extra softness to the look of the artwork.

For kids, and for kids at heart, it doesn’t get much better than Halloween. This spooky cutout animation takes us into the wild imaginings of two children on their way to enjoy Halloween at the Mall of America. The dark, textural, moody environment sets the stage for the characters that were animated and composited using AfterEffects. Animation and design by Todd Hemker & Soyeon Kim.
